Over the Christmas break, I pulled the short straw and was resigned to slumber on the old sofa bed in my brother’s guest bedroom.
As someone totally obsessed with all things sleep, this was not a welcomed prospect. I’ve become almost religious about ensuring I get the maximum amount of REM sleep, something I track on my WHOOP wearable device. For this reason, I have curated a sleepscape at home that includes a sumptuous supportive hybrid mattress, temperature-regulating duvet and pillows specifically designed for my sleep style as a side sleeper. But this felt too admin-heavy to bring with me for a two-week stint over the festive period.
Instead, I decided to order the Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper to meet me there, which in pictures looked thick enough to provide a sufficient coating for the springs you can feel poking out of the collapsible mattress. I wasn’t disappointed. I enjoyed sleeping on the mattress topper so much that it came home with me and is now a permanent fixture in the cloud-like sleep set-up of my dreams.
Key specs
Set-up
Rolled up relatively compactly (considering I went for the king size), the Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper unfurled itself and was ready to sleep on from the get-go. Typically bed-in-a-box companies require a matter of hours after removing the mattress but no such wait is necessary here.
Design
It is no wonder that the Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper has won a steady stream of awards. From the moment that you lay down on its spongey foam construction, you will see why it is so beloved. The luxury bed adornment is made up of the brand’s trademarked HydroFoam, a material made up of gel-infused technology that has temperature-regulating capabilities. Microgel capsules react to draw heat from your body, but the gaps between them release it away so you stay cool, calm and comfortable all night long.
It was created from orthopaedic grade foam to bounce back and prioritise proper body alignment so that from your head to toe, you are achieving ultimate comfort while you catch your eight hours, instead of waking up needing to crack your entire body.
The mattress topper is covered in a removable bamboo cover. A material you’ll find across the Panda collection, from its mattresses to its bedding, it is a wonder fabric known and loved for its breathable nature. It is also natural, and antibacterial and works to keep you cosy in winter while cool in the summer. To top it off, it’s also very sustainable, and the particular bamboo used by the bedding brand is organically grown in managed forests.
Handily, there are elastic straps at all four corners and on the reverse are tactically placed silicone dots to prevent slippage so that if you, like me, tend to toss and turn throughout the night, it shouldn’t move too.
In its King size, it weighs around 10kg so it’s not the most manoeuvrable if you intend on taking it on the go, but this is likely not something you will ever want to take off your bed.
