Palnackie Primary pupils ready to set sail thanks to Dalbeattie Men's Shed

Palnackie Primary pupils were absolutely thrilled to receive a wooden play ship for the playground, created by members of Dalbeattie Men’s Shed.

The school had been very lucky to receive donations from two Palnackie residents, one of whom was the late William (Billy) Greenway, a well known figure in the village. He attended the school as a child and became harbour master of the port.

The other generous donation came from the estate of Jock Smith. His parents arrived at the nearby Kirkennan Estate as gardeners and Jock worked there all his life.

He supported Palanckie Primary School for many years through regular donations and the pupils still compete for the Jock Smith Community Trophy.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Palanckie pupils and staff would like to thank the families of Jock and Billy for their extremely generous donations and Dalbeattie Men’s Shed for their fantastic craftsmanship.

“The children will enjoy HMS Billy-Jock for many years to come.”
