Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed readiness for the PA to assume 'full responsibility' in Gaza following the recent ceasefire deal. This marks the first statement from Abbas since the agreement was announced on Wednesday.
The PA has stated its willingness to assist in various aspects, including facilitating the return of displaced individuals to their homes, restoring essential services like water and electricity, managing border crossings, and overseeing reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
It is important to note that the PA, primarily led by the Fatah political party, previously held administrative control over Gaza until 2007. This changed when Hamas emerged victorious in the 2006 legislative elections in the occupied territories, leading to the expulsion of the PA from the strip. Since then, Hamas has governed Gaza while the PA has maintained control over parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
