Pakistan has confirmed two new cases of polio in its southern and eastern provinces, dealing a blow to the country's ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease. The cases were reported in Sindh and Punjab provinces, bringing the total number of polio cases in Pakistan to five since January 2025. In the previous year, Pakistan recorded 74 polio cases, highlighting the persistent challenge the country faces in eradicating the disease.
Health officials from the Pakistan Polio Eradication Program expressed concern over the latest cases, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and comprehensive vaccination efforts. In response to the new cases, health workers recently conducted a targeted vaccination drive in high-risk areas, aiming to reach vulnerable populations and prevent further spread of the virus.

Despite ongoing vaccination campaigns, polio workers in Pakistan often face security threats while carrying out their duties. Militants have targeted vaccination teams in the past, spreading misinformation and distrust about the vaccine's safety and intentions. Tragically, over 200 polio workers and police officers protecting them have lost their lives in attacks since the 1990s.
Authorities in Pakistan remain committed to eradicating polio from the country and have launched a nationwide anti-polio campaign to immunize millions of children under the age of five. The campaign seeks to vaccinate 44.2 million children, underscoring the scale of the vaccination efforts required to achieve herd immunity and prevent future outbreaks.
The recent resurgence of polio cases in Pakistan serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in eliminating the disease entirely. Health officials urge the public to support vaccination efforts and combat misinformation to protect the health and well-being of children across the country.
