Flash floods triggered by monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in southern Pakistan, with a death toll of 209 reported since July 1. The recent heavy rains have caused significant damage and loss of life across various provinces in the country.
Punjab province recorded fourteen fatalities in the past 24 hours, adding to the grim toll. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces have also witnessed a high number of casualties due to rain-related incidents.
Pakistan experiences its annual monsoon season from July through September, with climate change being attributed to the intensification of rainfall in recent years. In 2022, the country faced devastating downpours that affected a large portion of the population, resulting in a substantial loss of life and property.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted continued heavy rains in certain regions of the country for the upcoming week. Southern Pakistan, particularly Sukkur district in Sindh province, has been severely impacted by flooding, leading to the inundation of streets.
Efforts are underway to clear the Karakorum highway in the north, which has been blocked by landslides. Flash floods have also caused damage to bridges in the region, disrupting traffic flow and posing challenges for commuters.
Authorities have issued warnings to tourists to avoid affected areas to ensure their safety. The National Disaster Management Authority reported that over 2,200 homes have been damaged since the onset of monsoon rains on July 1.
Neighboring Afghanistan has also faced rain and flood-related damage since May, with more than 80 fatalities reported. Recent incidents in Ghazni resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals after their vehicle was swept away by floods, as confirmed by provincial police.
