Paisley woman dies in Benidorm accident hours arriving for holiday with friends

A Paisley woman has died in a tragic accident just hours after arriving for a holiday in Benidorm.

Marie Riley, nee Maitland, passed away after an incident in the popular seaside resort on Monday, March 7.

Heartbroken wife Lynne announced the news to friends and family on social media the next day, prompting an outpouring of grief from friends and family, the Daily Record reports.

The couple, who had been married for four years, had travelled with friends to Benidorm on Monday.

Pals flooded Facebook with tributes to Marie, who was described as "a beautiful lassie" and "genuinely one in a million".

Megan Smith said: "Lynne I am in complete shock. I am so so sorry. One of the loveliest girls I’ve ever met. Please let us know if you need anything at all."

Ronetta Adams added: "Life is so cruel Lynne, take each day as it comes and look after yourself, you have great family and friends who will help you through this tragedy.

"Our thought are with you all, sleep tight Marie you will be sadly missed."

May Pollock wrote: "So sorry to hear about Marie, she was an amazing person, will never forget her, thinking of you, we are here if you need anything at all."

And Savannah Boreman noted: "Love you to the moon and back Lynne, I am still shocked beyond words but we’ll all be here when you get home."

Heartbroken Lynne shared this snap of the pair online. (Facebook)

Neighbour Charlene Mullen, who stays next to the pair, said in a post addressed to Marie: "We started as neighbours and grew to become best friends.

"The laughter, jokes and sometimes cries we shared around the garden fire will live with me forever. I cannot believe I will never see you again. I am absolutely devastated for your wife. We will love you forever. Rest easy beautiful."

The paper contacted Spain's Policia Nacional for comment on the support it is providing to the family in the tourist town, a favourite of Scots seeking sunnier climes.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are assisting the family of a British woman following an incident in Benidorm and in contact with the Spanish authorities."
