Paisley lout to carry out unpaid work after stealing and crashing Range Rover

A Paisley lout who stole a Range Rover and crashed it into a parked car has been banned from driving for more than two years.

Lewis Irvine, 22, pinched the keys of the gold Range Rover, took it for a spin to pick up a friend and then ploughed it into a Vauxhall Corsa in February 2020.

Procurator fiscal depute Maria Murdoch, previously told Paisley Sheriff Court: “Around 6.30am the accused walked round to a property in Low Road, Paisley, and placed a car key in his pocket.

“He left the property and used the key to gain access to the vehicle, a Range Rover.

“He left the driveway and attended at another property to pick up another person.

“Around 8am the witness was in her living room when her daughter ran through, stating the car was being driven by the accused.

“They observed the vehicle then collide with another stationary Corsa before being driven off.

“The police were contacted who traced the Range Rover vehicle on an off road lane and noticed it was significantly damaged.

“Police viewed CCTV from a nearby property which showed two males with the second male matching a description of the accused.

“The accused was traced and arrested. He wasn’t cautioned and charged at the time due to police carrying out enquiries.”

Irvine, of Argyle Street in the town, admitted he breached a bail order on February 24, by not being within his home address during his curfew hours of 8pm to 8am each day.

Irvine, who is a disqualified driver, admitted to stealing the vehicle and driving it without a license and insurance on Low Road, Park Lane, Glencoats Drive, Dalskeith Road and Blackstoun Road before colliding with a parked vehicle in Park Lane, causing damage to both.

Defence agent Terry Gallanagh told the court Irvine had experienced “trauma in childhood.”

Mr Gallanagh said: “These traumas have had a profound effect on his life.

“Alcohol and drugs have already plighted his progression.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Gillian Craig said: “You are still a very young man and the criminal justice social work report does disclose a number of traumas in your life, all of which I’m duty bound to consider.”

Sheriff Craig ordered Irvine to carry out a total of 175 hours of unpaid work within the community in 18 months.

In addition, Irvine was placed under supervision for 12 months and banned from driving for 29 months.
