Padres Lost to the Phillies in the Unluckiest Way Possible After Ump Got Hit by Ball

The San Diego Padres have been one of the most disappointing teams of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, and their woes continued Monday night when they lost at home to the Phillies, 9-7, to fall to 65-74 on the year.

They did have a chance to score some runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and maybe tie the game up but then disaster struck when an umpire got hit by a ball on a bad throw to third and the runners on second and third were unable to advance. The Phillies got the next two hitters out and escaped from the jam.

Look at how unlucky the Padres got on this play:

If that ball gets through then Fernando Tatis Jr. gets up and scores easily from third. Juan Soto, who was stealing second on the play, probably gets to third and the tying run would have only been 90 feet away with one out.

The umpire did nothing wrong there—he was in the perfect spot to make a call. It was just one of those bad breaks that worked out well for Philadelphia, and went horribly wrong for San Diego.
