Packers WR Christian Watson returns to practice, progressing through concussion protocol

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson returned to practice on Thursday, providing a positive development as the rookie attempts to progress through the league’s concussion protocol and play Sunday in Detroit.

Watson, who suffered the head injury in the first quarter of last Sunday’s loss in Buffalo, missed Wednesday’s practice.

Thursday’s practice was a padded practice. The Packers also returned offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, who missed last week’s loss and Wednesday’s practice because of a foot injury.

To play against the Lions, Watson would need to clear all the hurdles in the league’s concussion protocol. A return to practice is one step in the process.

Last week, Rashan Gary was able to get through the concussion protocol in time to play against the Bills.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Aaron Rodgers have both said that Watson was going to be a big part of the offense’s gameplan – especially as a deep threat – before he went down after the end of a 12-yard catch on the game’s first drive.

LaFleur also said Thursday that he believes Watson is mentally prepared and capable to play any role required.

Watson, the 34th overall pick, has missed three games this season. Over 104 total offensive snaps, the rookie has eight catches on 12 targets for 64 yards and three rushes for 19 yards and a touchdown. He also returned two kickoffs for 35 yards.

The Packers will put out an updated injury report later on Thursday, with a final injury report with official designations arriving on Friday.
