Packers’ third-and-long defense has been dominant to start 2022

The Green Bay Packers defense ranks first in the NFL in third-down conversion percentage to start 2022. A big reason why? A truly dominant start on third-and-long situations.

Opponents are 0-for-21 converting 3-and-8 or longer against the Packers this season.

Over the 21 third-and-long plays, opponents are averaging just 2.7 yards and have only 48 net passing yards.

The most yards allowed on a third-and-long play came on an 11-yard completion to Bucs tight end Cameron Brate on 3rd-and-30.

Edge rusher Rashan Gary has two sacks and a tackle on 3rd-and-8 or more. Cornerback Eric Stokes has a team-high four tackles, all short of the sticks. Cornerback Rasul Douglas has added two stops, and linebackers De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker have combined for three.

The Packers have been consistent in getting these stops, with at least four in every game and six in each of the last two games.

Third-and-long stops by game

Week 1, at MIN: 5
Week 2, vs. CHI: 4
Week 3, at TB: 6
Week 4, vs. NE: 6

The Packers just need more and more of these opportunities. With a top pass-rush and a veteran secondary, it’s going to be tough on opponents to convert when they get behind the sticks on third down. Stopping the run with more efficiency on early downs would help. The Packers are giving up 4.8 yards per carry on first down and 6.1 yards per carry on second down this season.

Overall, the Packers have allowed 10 third-down conversions (fewest in NFL) on 42 attempts.
