Packers signing Iowa RB Tyler Goodson following 2022 draft

The Green Bay Packers are adding an intriguing name to the running back room following the 2022 NFL draft. According to both Jason Hirschhorn and Justin Melo, the Packers will sign Iowa running back Tyler Goodson to a deal.

Goodson (5-9, 197) rushed for 2,551 yards and 18 touchdowns and caught 70 passes over three seasons at Iowa. While undersized, Goodson is a terrific athlete who led the Hawkeyes in rushing three straight seasons, was a two-time All-Big Ten pick and rushed for over 1,100 yards in 13 games last season.

In Green Bay, Goodson will get a shot to compete this summer with Kylin Hill and Patrick Taylor for a backup job at running back behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. His acceleration, short-area quickness and receiving ability should make him a player to watch during the offseason workout program and training camp in Matt LaFleur’s outside zone run scheme.

One of his top athletic comparisons is Jones, a fifth-round pick in 2017:

Will he become the next Jones? Probably not. But the skillset is intriguing, and now Goodson, who is still only 21 years old, has a shot at winning a roster spot on a deep Packers roster.
