Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Christian Watson did not suffer a concussion on Sunday against the Detroit Lions and was instead taken out of the game for precautionary reasons.
“That was not a concussion, that was all precautionary,” coach Matt LaFleur said Monday. “That’s just the times we live in right now, and with what transpired in Buffalo. But it was 100 percent ruled it was not a concussion. Matter of fact, he was dying to go back in the game. We thought it was best to shut him down because of what transpired in Buffalo.”
LaFleur said Watson “cleared everything” in terms of the concussion testing at Ford Field.
Because of the concussion he did suffer last week against the Bills, the Packers took the safe route and held him out of the rest of the game.
“He took a nice shot in the chest and lost his breath for a minute. It’s unfortunate,” LaFleur said.
Watson played 17 snaps before the injury. He caught two passes for 24 yards, including an 18-yarder, on 12 routes run in the passing game.
Avoiding a second concussion in two weeks is certainly good news for Watson’s well-being and availability, both for this week against the Dallas Cowboys and long-term.
The second-round pick was expected to play a big part in the offense’s game plan in Buffalo and then started on Sunday in Detroit. Because of various injuries this season, Watson has played only 121 snaps on offense.
