Packers restructured OT Yosh Nijman’s contract to create $2.5M in cap space

The Green Bay Packers added four void years onto the contract of offensive tackle Yosh Nijman last Saturday to create a little over $2.5 million in salary cap space, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Nijman, now a backup offensive tackle for the Packers, was set to count $4.3 million on the cap for the Packers in 2023 before the restructure. He signed a one-year restricted tender this offseason to return to Green Bay.

The four void years added on to his one-year deal allow the Packers to spread out a conversion of base salary to signing bonus over five years on the cap. When Nijman’s deal voids following the 2023 season, the prorated money from the final four years of the deal will accelerate onto the cap in the form of dead money in 2024.

The restructure was done before the start of the regular season so the Packers could create maximum savings in 2023. The amount saved this year will be pushed to the cap in 2024.

Nijman, 27, competed to start at right tackle during training camp but lost the job to Zach Tom. He also fell behind Rasheed Walker as the team’s preferred swing twckle and backup behind left David Bakhtiari.

Nijman started 21 games for the Packers between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He was on the field for five offensive snaps and seven special teams snaps during the Packers’ Week 1 win over the Bears on Sunday.
