Packers re-fill practice squad by returning veteran cornerback

The Green Bay Packers re-filled the team’s practice squad on Wednesday by returning veteran cornerback Robert Rochell.

Rochell’s roster journey over the last week now ends with him back on the practice squad.

With an open roster spot after suspending receiver Romeo Doubs, the Packers signed Rochell from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Saturday. He played in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams, appearing on 11 special teams snaps. Rochell was flagged for holding while blocking during a punt return but also drew a holding penalty while covering a punt.

On Monday, the Packers released Rochell. He cleared waivers and is now returning on the practice squad.

The Packers elevated Rochell twice from the practice squad before signing him to the roster. Players are allowed three elevations. Because he was signed to the active roster and released, his elevation counter is reset.

Rochell, a 2021 fourth-round pick of the Rams, played 12 special teams against the Tennessee Titans and 11 special teams snaps against the Minnesota Vikings. He had a tackle against the Titans but missed a tackle against the Vikings.

His 34 special teams snaps split up by group: 14 covering kickoffs, nine covering punts, nine blocking for punt returns and two blocking for kickoff returns.

The Packers once again have three cornerbacks on the practice squad: Rochell and rookies Kamal Hadden and Kalen King.

Rochell arrived in Green Bay in October of last year. He appeared in nine games in 2023, playing 112 snaps on special teams, and was active for both playoff games.
