The Carolina Panthers signed rookie tight end Messiah Swinson off the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson.
The Packers signed Swinson as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in May. He was released at final cuts on August 27 and re-signed to the practice squad the next day.
Swinson’s departure allowed the Packers to re-fill the practice squad with the signing of former Miami Dolphins running back Chris Brooks.
Players on practice squads are allowed to sign contracts to join 53-man rosters elsewhere.
Swinson played 28 snaps for the Packers over three preseason games. He failed to catch his lone target, but his job is mostly inline run blocking. Of his 28 snaps, 23 were run-blocking snaps.
In Carolina, Swinson will join Ian Thomas, Tommy Tremble, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jordan Matthews at tight end.
The Panthers released veteran pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to make room for Swinson.
