Packers lose assistant coach Luke Getsy to Chicago Bears

One of the top assistant coaches for Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers is leaving to become the new playcaller for the Chicago Bears in 2022. The Bears announced the hiring of Luke Getsy as the team’s new offensive coordinator on Sunday.

Getsy served as LaFleur’s quarterbacks coach for the last three seasons. He was promoted to passing game coordinator before the 2020 season.

The Packers had an opening at offensive coordinator after losing Nathaniel Hackett to the Denver Broncos, but the opportunity in Green Bay wouldn’t involve playcalling duties. In Chicago, Getsy will get a chance to call the plays for new Bears coach Matt Eberflus.

With Getsy heading to Chicago, the Packers will promote offensive line coach and run game coordinator Adam Stenavich to offensive coordinator.

Getsy spent seven total seasons in Green Bay. He was an offensive quality control coach from 2014-15 and the wide receivers coach from 2016-17 under Mike McCarthy. He left to be the offensive coordinator at Miss. State in 2018 but returned to Green Bay after the Packers hired LaFleur.

In Chicago, Getsy will get an opportunity to rebuild the offense and work with young quarterback Justin Fields, who is entering his second NFL season in 2022.

The Packers will now see Getsy and his variation of the LaFleur offense twice a season.
