Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he spoke with receiver Romeo Doubs on Monday and he’s hoping his team can now move forward after what he described as an “isolated incident” with Doubs resulting in a suspension last week.
LaFleur called the meeting with his third-year receiver “productive.” He expects Doubs — who skipped practice on Thursday and Friday last week before the team suspended him on Saturday — to return to the team on Wednesday.
“What’s done is done. We’re moving forward. I expect us collectively as a team to keep moving that way,” LaFleur said Monday.
In a roundabout way, LaFleur confirmed that Doubs’ problem was a lack of individual opportunities within the Packers offense.
“Everybody has their own goals and aspirations and wants but you just have to keep it under what’s best for our team. Our job is to win football games,” LaFleur said. “I would love everybody to go out there and get every number they’d like to hit, but for me and setting up this team, it’s all about winning.”
Doubs led the Packers receivers in snaps played through four games, but he caught only 12 passes on 20 targets and didn’t have a touchdown. He caught eight touchdown passes as a second-year player in 2023 and was excellent in the postseason, leading the team with 10 catches and 234 receiving yards.
LaFleur acknowledged the Packers’ depth at receiver can create distribution problems but he said he doesn’t believe something like this will happen with Doubs again.
“This hasn’t happened with him before and I’m not expecting it to happen again,” LaFleur said.
Moving forward from the incident requires a recommitment to winning from everyone.
“We’re going to keep it about the team and continue to focus on winning and doing our best to put everybody in a position to set us up to win games,” LaFleur said.
The Packers are off Tuesday. Wednesday is the first practice of the week and the start of prep for the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6.
