At last, our long national nightmare is over. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the New York Jets finally completed a trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire quarterback Aaron Rodgers, meaning the New Orleans Saints will be facing a different quarterback when they visit Lambeau Field in the fall.
Whether that will be Jordan Love or someone else remains to be seen; the Packers haven’t expressed much confidence in their former first-round pick, who has only appeared in 10 games through his first two seasons, losing his lone start back in 2021. Green Bay could position itself to draft a quarterback after moving up to the No. 13 overall pick and adding a couple of second rounders in this trade with the Jets.
The terms of the trade:
- Packers get: 2023 first round pick (No. 13), 2023 second round pick (No. 42), 2023 sixth round pick (No. 207), conditional 2024 second round pick that upgrades to first round (if Rodgers plays 65% or more of snaps)
- Jets get: 2023 first round pick (No. 15), 2023 fifth round pick (No. 170), Aaron Rodgers
As for the Saints and Jets: Rodgers’ new team is not scheduled to play against New Orleans until 2025, and the 39-year-old quarterback may choose to retire by then. We’ll circle back in a few years and see if he’s still hanging around. In the meantime, an already-weak Packers team just got worse, and the Saints should feel good about their chances of making some noise in the NFC with Derek Carr under center.
