Pablo Carreno Busta hits freakish Australian Open winner with fans amazed it’s legal

Pablo Carreno Busta left tennis fans stunned and puzzled with a remarkable shot to win a lengthy rally at the Australian Open.

The shot came as the final move in a lengthy rally with second round opponent Tallon Griekspoor.

Dutch player Griekspoor attempted an overhead smash, but could only make contact with the tip of his racket, causing the ball to travel with much less power.

It narrowly made it over the net and bounced in, but what he didn't account for was the backspin carrying it back over the net and onto his side without Carreno Busta touching it.

The quick-thinking Spaniard was on the scene to make the most of the bizarre circumstances.

He ran around the net, making sure he didn't make contact with it or trip over the umpire's chair, and hit the ball back towards the net so Griekspoor had no chance of returning it.

The incredible move caught the crowd and the TV audience by surprise, including those covering the match.

"Oh my goodness. Perfectly legitimate," said commentator John Fitzgerald. "And great anticipation there from Carreno Busta... playbook right here for this year's Australian Open.

"This smash comes off the tip of the racket, it spins, just goes over the net and is going back over the other side of the net. Carreno Busta senses it ... oh, that's sensational."

"Completely legal as long as he doesn't touch the net, and he doesn't."

It was a more extreme example of that rule, which had already come into use earlier in the tournament.

Third seed Alexander Zverev was on the receiving end of a similar finish when his shot bounced back over the net with the help of backspin, and first round opponent Daniel Altmaier acted quickly to reach over and flick it away to win the point.

Some fans were blown away by Carreno Busta's reaction to make sure he won the point.

"Saw it live. Still in disbelief he nailed it," one viewer wrote on social media.

Another said: "Amazing – hitting on the other side of the net. I have never seen this in 40+ years of watching tennis!"

A third added: "Everyone wanted to try that at least once in their life... He did it."

Some others appeared to be in disbelief that such a shot is within the rules.

"It's amazing sometimes what is allowed in tennis and what is not!" one fan declared.

Another said: "Some tennis rules really make me laugh at times."
