A P-plater has been fined almost $3000 and six demerit points after police allege the drive sped up to more than 150km/h while passing Highway Patrol officers.

Raymond Terrace police were checking speed on the Pacific Highway north of Raymond Terrace just after 2.30pm, August 3 when they clocked a Subaru Impreza with P-plates at 116 km/h in the 100 zone.

Police said as the Impreza passed the officer's car it accelerated to approximately 170 km/h before being checked at 156 km/h.

The car was stopped with a large amount of smoke coming from the engine bay.

The 17-year-old male driver handed over a P1 provisional licence restricted to 90 km/h.

Police said the man told them that he had an adrenaline rush and tried to evade officers but when he saw the patrol car was gaining he slowed down to avoid putting other motorists at risk.

He had obtained his licence two months prior.

The driver was issued an infringement notice for P1 driver exceed speed over 45km/h which carries a fine of $2959 and six demerit points.

His licence was suspended for six months and he will be subject to a further suspension for excessive demerit points.

Police said the average speed of the Impreza was calculated at 141km/h over a distance of 2.1 kilometres.
