Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes agree on Marcus Rashford prediction at Manchester United

Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes are backing Marcus Rashford to break Wayne Rooney's record goals tally for Manchester United - as long as he makes some minor adjustments to his game.

Rashford, 24, is back to his best under Erik ten Hag following a dismal season at Old Trafford and beyond. Indeed, amid collective struggles, the England international only scored five goals in all competitions last term.

He has already surpassed that total with six goals in 14 outings since Ten Hag was appointed manager, including one against FC Sheriff on Thursday night. That was his 99th since breaking into the first team.

Hargreaves and Scholes were together on the BT Sport panel when Rashford helped to secure the three points against their Moldovan opponents at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Hargreaves said: "His overall play and link-up play has improved over the years. Goals will come and scoring 99 at 24 is amazing.

"By the time he finishes he could have 250 goals for Manchester United. He is a quality player and he has so much attacking ability to be the perfect attacker.

"His confidence has been hit with the additions of all these different players and he has not played all the time. He just needs to be a bit more consistent in front of goal and they will fly in the more he plays under Ten Hag."

Scholes added: " It's not just the goals but the appearances, as well. The lad burst onto the scene when people did not really expect him to.

"He does get a little bit of stick for his finishing. He likes to smash the ball a lot and not so much placing it into the corners, but he can develop that as he is still young. He would like to score more goals, but he is not someone that relies on other players, he can go past a man and create a chance for himself."

Rashford has scored 99 goals and provided 61 assists in 317 matches for the club. Rooney netted 253 goals with 146 assists in 559 appearances between 2004 and 2017.
