Owen Farrell tipped to be 'unbelievable' player if he crosses rugby codes as dad Andy did

Owen Farrell has been tipped to be an 'unbelievable' player if he swaps rugby union for rugby league just like his dad. Farrell has had enjoyed plenty of success in recent years, and announced himself as one of the top union players in the world.

The 31-year-old has won three Six Nations titles with England and domestically won five Premiership crowns with Saracens. Things for the England international could have been so much different though.

Farrell began his career playing rugby league, the 13-man code, when growing up as a youngster in Wigan - a town steeped in rugby league history.

Following his past experiences, former Wigan Warriors man Sam Tomkins has tipped the 31-year-old to one day cross rugby codes, and once again impress. Talking on The Big Jim Show, Tomkins said: "I know that he [Farrell] likes rugby league but I know that he is ultra successful in rugby union and if I was him I would be doing exactly what he is doing.

"He is enjoying himself, he is a star in the game and a star over the world in rugby union. If he ever did fancy it at the end of his career it would be amazing to see what he could do because I do genuinely believe he would be an unbelievable rugby league player.”

Of course Farrell would not be the first man in his family to make the rugby switch. The 31-year-old's dad Andy also crossed codes, however he started his career playing league before jumping ship to union.

Farrell Sr spent the whole of his 13-year league career playing for the Warriors, before moving across to Union in 2005 where he spent four years at Saracens. The 47-year-old also represented his country in both disciplines

He is still involved in the union game, currently holding the head coach role of the Ireland national team. Farrell Sr has enjoyed a successful spell in charge of the Irish, which saw him take his team to the top of the world rankings in July of this year.
