Energy supplier OVO will join a National Grid scheme which could see its customers with smart meters earn up to £100.
From next week, OVO customers participating in the National Grid's Demand Flexibility Scheme can reduce their energy usage during peak hours whenever the operator sends out an alert requesting they do so.
The trial will see three types of notification, two of which will be exclusive to OVO customers and will alert participants of the days and times the grid is most likely to see demand.
The third is a notification asking participants to reduce their energy, and will see them earn a minimum of £1 for every kWh shifted below their personal target.
Initially, the scheme will run from December 8 to March 31, 2023. It is open to 15,000 OVO customers, but this figure planned to increase after the first month.
To be eligible, you must have a working electricity smart meter installed and opt in to daily or half-hourly meter reads.
Additionally, people hoping to join cannot be part of OVO's existing Power Move trial which is running until March 2023.
The Power Move promotion could see customers paid up to £100 for reducing energy usage between the hours of 4pm - 7pm to help reduce pressure on their supplies.
Raman Bhatia, CEO of OVO, comments: "We're pleased to be joining the National Grid Electricity System Operator's Demand Flexibility Scheme and launching another trial which rewards customers for their efforts in making small but significant changes to the way they consume energy.
"We know that winter is going to be a challenging time for many, so relieving that pressure where we can, and supporting our customers has never been more important."
