'Overwhelmed' New Hampshire Man Forced to Turn Over Hundreds of Mice to Animal Shelter: 'We've Never Seen Anything Like This'

A New Hampshire animal shelter is seeking help after a man turned over hundreds of pet mice, most of which were pregnant.

The man initially brought 73 mice on Monday to the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, claiming he had around 150 tanks of mice at his home, Boston.com reported. After further investigation by the shelter, it was discovered that the situation had gotten out of control.

The man held hundreds of more mice, which are bred to be pets, in overcrowded, "filthy" conditions, NHSPCA told the outlet. On Thursday, the shelter had removed around 400 mice from the man's home and expected the total to rise to 1,000, as many of the female mice were pregnant.

"By Tuesday morning, more mice had been born," NHSPCA said in a statement to Boston.com. "Our current estimate is that there are an approximate 400 still at the man's home, but we may be looking at intaking as many as 1,000 mice in total."

About 100 mice have been transferred to shelters across New England, but the shelter is still battling caring for an overwhelming amount of mice, as reported by WMUR-TV.

Once all the animals are removed they will be placed in new homes, with the shelter focusing on helping injured and sick mice recover.
