'Oversubscribed' Bulwell Academy to receive £125k to boost pupil numbers

Bulwell Academy is set to receive more than £125,000 in funding from Nottingham City Council. The money, which was approved earlier this month, will go towards supporting more secondary school places at the academy in Squires Avenue.

£128,000 will be handed over by Nottingham City Council as part of their basic need grant. It will fund two projects - one reconfiguring break out and communal spaces to create additional classroom space and refitting the food technology room to support the increase in pupil numbers.

With the increasing student numbers, the academy will now convert areas into dedicated classroom spaces. The original food technology building incorporated a catering kitchen, which has remained unusable due to its configuration and layout. This will now be converted into a more conventional food technology room.

A council document states: "Both projects will support Bulwell Academy's significant pupil growth and will enable the school to admit an additional 30 pupils (one full class) over their normal pupil admission number this September 2022. This additional capacity has been negotiated with the council's education department, which is vital to support our statutory duty to deliver sufficient secondary school places.

"There is significant growth in demand for places in this area of the city and Bulwell Academy is full and oversubscribed. The academy is only able to offer the additional places, with delivery of these schemes.

This decision was approved by the council’s Capital Board and the Chief Finance Officer on March 14.
