Overnight closures of M56 motorway postponed

Overnight closures of the M56 as part of a huge bridge replacement project have been postponed. A series of overnight closures of a stretch of the motorway in Cheshire had been due to begin this weekend as work continues on the replacement of the A533 Expressway bridge.

The bridge located between junctions 11 and 12 near Runcorn, and which carries Chester Road and the A533 over the motorway is a vital local link is being replaced with a new 67m two-span concrete bridge.

The old bridge is being kept open whilst work continues on its replacement, and traffic will be transferred to the new one before the old structure is demolished.

Closures of the M56 between junctions 11 and 12 overnight on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22 had been scheduled. However, these have now been postponed to allow additional work to be carried out.

The overnight closures planned for next weekend are still be in place. The motorway will be closed between junctions 11 and 12 on Saturday 28 January and Sunday 29 January from 9pm to 6am.

There are also lane closures planned for January, February and March. Next week the motorway will be reduced to one lane in both directions between 9pm and 6am from Monday, January 23 to Friday, January, 27.

The same measure is also planned from Monday February, 27 to Friday, March 3 and from Monday, March 6 to Friday, March 10. This is to allow work on the walls which support the bridge on either side of the motorway.

The new bridge, which had been constructed off-site, was lifted into place in November 2022 and work on the project continues.
