Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom To Hit Theaters In North America

overlord The sacred kingdom

Sony Pictures has announced that the anime feature Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, produced by Crunchyroll, will be hitting theaters in North America on November 8. This film serves as a continuation of the popular anime series Overlord, which is based on the novels by Japanese author Kugane Maruyama. The Sacred Kingdom picks up where season 4 of the Overlord series left off, following the story of Momonga, a regular salaryman who gets transported into his favorite video game.

The movie was animated by the renowned Japanese studio Madhouse and covers the arc known as Holy Kingdom. Sony will be releasing the film in Imax and premium large formats, offering both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub for viewers.

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom will be competing at the box office on November 8 against other films like Lionsgate’s holiday comedy The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Focus Feature's awards contender Conclave, and Vertical’s sci-fi thriller Elevation starring Anthony Mackie.

The film was directed by Naoyuki Ito with script coordination by Yukie Sugawara. Satoshi Tasaki handled the character design and chief animation direction, with illustrations by so-bin and music composed by Shuji Katayama.

Japanese anime has been gaining traction in U.S. theaters, with Sony and Crunchyroll previously releasing Blue Lock: Episode Nagi and Toho preparing to launch My Hero Academia: You’re Next in North America. Crunchyroll, now under Sony's ownership, has seen success with domestic theatrical releases, such as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen, which have performed well both in North America and globally.
