Overhead images reveal damage Storm Malik caused after blowing roof off Gateshead home

Overheard images reveal the extent of the damage caused to a Gateshead home by Storm Malik.

Gale force winds ripped the entire roof off a terraced property in Overhill Terrace, Bensham, when Storm Malik hit on Saturday.

Elevated images taken by Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys indicate the gales uprooted the roof's framework from the now exposed top floor of the home, before throwing it onto the street in front, smashing windows in the process.

Stunned neighbours spoke of their shock when they were woken on Saturday morning by the sound of tiles falling onto the street. Less than half an hour later they heard a rumble as the roof raised from its fixings before crashing onto the pavement in front and sending slates flying.

"There were tiles coming off left, right, and centre," said Taylor Prudhoe, who lives next door to the house.

"They were all over the road so I decided to move my car, which somehow hadn't actually been hit - even though there were tiles all around it.

"Soon after that, the fire brigade came and told us we needed to evacuate. I asked if I could quickly grab my work uniform and my cat and when I was in the bedroom I heard the biggest crash ever."

She added: "It was scary seeing debris flying everywhere."

It is not thought anybody suffered serious injuries due to the roof being blown away.

Storm Malik subsided on Saturday, but a further wind warning is in place for Storm Corrie from 3pm on Sunday.

The Met Office is due to lift that weather warning at noon on Monday.

Scotland is forecast to be worst hit by Storm Corrie, but the Met Office warns travel disruption, power cuts and building damage are likely in the North East of England. Coastal areas in particular are expected to be hit by dangerous winds.
