Over 80 individuals were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis during Pro-Palestinian demonstrations that took place on Saturday. The university released a statement detailing the events that led to the arrests.
The group of demonstrators, which consisted of students, employees, and individuals not affiliated with the university, marched at various locations on campus. They set up tents and made it clear that they did not plan to leave. The university expressed concerns about the intentions of the group, stating that the demonstration had the potential to escalate and become dangerous.
According to the university's statement, when the demonstrators began to establish a camp in violation of university policy, they were instructed to leave. Despite multiple requests, some individuals refused to comply, leading to the arrests. Charges of trespassing will be brought against all those arrested, with additional charges such as resisting arrest and assault for some, including injuries to police officers.
The university emphasized its commitment to free expression but stressed the importance of respecting campus policies. Swift action was taken to enforce these policies to the fullest extent possible.
Among those arrested was presidential candidate Jill Stein, although her campaign's communications director mentioned that they were not aware of any charges at that time.
