Over £3K raised for family of tragic Larne bonfire builder John Steele

A fundraiser for the family of tragic Larne bonfire builder John Steele has raised over £3,000.

The father-of-two died following an accident at the Antiville bonfire site on Saturday, July 9, bringing much sadness to the local community who have said that a dark cloud now hangs over it.

In order to support John's family, a JustGiving page has been started by the community and has since raised £3,054 at the time of writing.

It said: "A dark cloud is over our wee town at the passing of John Steele after a tragic accident at Antiville bonfire last night. No one is ever prepared for that news to come to your door. So I've set this up in the hope that people will donate no matter how big or small , to take off a bit of financial pressure for the family as they begin to make arrangements for John's funeral.

"The whole town is shook at this devastating news and our hearts go out to Artie , Jackie, Kitty, his two daughters Caitlin and Macy-Lee, Catrina and the whole family circle. You will be sorely missed John."

The bonfire at Antiville was removed by Mid and East Antrim Council on Sunday at the request of the local community.

Following this a vigil was held at the bonfire site where people gathered to pay their respects. This ended with the remains of the bonfire being set alight.
