According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), over 330,000 tons of waste have accumulated in or near populated areas in Gaza, posing significant environmental and health risks. The agency highlighted that this waste crisis has reached a critical point, with children resorting to rummaging through trash on a daily basis.
UNRWA emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to address the dire living conditions in the Palestinian enclave. The agency stressed that restoring humane conditions is essential to safeguard the well-being of the population.
This statement from UNRWA follows a warning from the UN's relief chief, who cautioned that over a million Palestinians could face starvation by the next month due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The proposal for a ceasefire is currently facing challenges, as neither Israel nor Hamas has publicly committed to the plan.
