On Thursday afternoon, more than 30 anti-Israel protestors were arrested at Indiana University in Bloomington as they clashed with police in riot gear. The Indiana State Police (IUPD) reported that the protestors had placed tents and canopies at Dunn Meadow Park on the campus, which violated IU's policy. The protestors were informed multiple times throughout the day that they needed to remove the structures to comply with university rules.
After a final request to remove the tents and canopies at around 3:45 p.m., officers began arresting those who had refused to leave. At least 33 individuals were taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Justice Center with the assistance of Indiana State Police troopers.
Indiana University emphasized its commitment to free speech and open dialogue but stressed that such activities must adhere to the college's rules. The university's statement highlighted the importance of conducting expressive activities in accordance with free speech and events policies, including obtaining advanced approval for the installation of temporary structures.
Additional Arrests in Indianapolis
Earlier on Thursday morning, more than a dozen anti-Israel protestors were also arrested in Indianapolis after blocking Meridian Street near the governor's residence. The arrests in both Bloomington and Indianapolis underscore the importance of following guidelines and regulations when engaging in expressive activities on university campuses and public spaces.
