Recently, a significant incident occurred in Nigeria's Borno state, where approximately 274 inmates managed to escape from a prison due to heavy flooding. The Nigerian Correctional Service revealed this alarming development, stating that the flood had caused the walls of the correctional facilities, including the medium security custodial center Maiduguri (MSCC), to collapse, along with the staff quarters in the city.
During the chaos, 281 inmates took advantage of the situation and successfully fled while they were being transferred to a different facility deemed safe and secure. Fortunately, seven of the escapees were later recaptured, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil.
The service spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, emphasized that they possess detailed information about the identities of the escapees, including their biometrics. This crucial data has been made accessible to the public to aid in the search and eventual recapture of the remaining inmates.
Despite the challenges posed by the flooding and the subsequent escape of the inmates, the Nigerian Correctional Service remains resolute in its efforts to locate and secure the fugitives. The ongoing search operations are a top priority for the service, as they strive to bring all the escaped inmates back into custody and ensure the safety of the public.
