Over 130 tickets issued in a day as cops crack down on dangerous drivers

Almost 100 motorists have been clocked speeding and dozens more issued tickets for driving offences during a day of action in Salford. Greater Manchester Police held Operation Vortex across the borough on Tuesday (April 26), with officers from the force's Specialist Operations Branch deployed to target dangerous drivers.

Across the borough, GMP issued 98 speeding tickets and 36 tickets for other traffic offences. Three arrests were also made, including one for possession of class B drugs and drug driving in Swinton.

Meanwhile, two vehicles were seized and one was found to be unroadworthy. A spokesperson for GMP Traffic wrote on Twitter: "Everything from dangerously carried loads, to bald tyres and kids with no seatbelts on were dealt with."

Operation Vortex takes place on a regular basis across Greater Manchester, and officers hope it will make a big difference in helping to improve road safety across the region. Chf Insp Danny Byrne, of GMP's Roads Policing Unit, said: "Last year alone, there were 67 fatal road traffic collisions which resulted in 71 deaths so making Greater Manchester's roads safer is a priority for us.

"Hopefully, days of action under Operation Vortex are building public trust and confidence that GMP is focussing on fighting, preventing and reducing crimes committed on our roads to keep people safe. We will continue to run this operation targeting illegal drivers and vehicles in areas across Greater Manchester on unannounced dates."
