Outrigging the shipwrecked pirate ship at Lexington's Woodland Park pool

The pirate ship water feature at Lexington’s Woodland Park pool was a big hit. Age took its toll and construction is well underway on a new and bigger pool attraction.

So, the just-for-fun story is the old pirate vessel shipwrecked and now what’s called paradise lagoon is being built with those boat parts. And Project Manager Guy Rivers said the new feature will have blasters and four slides and much more.

“That hangs off one of those arms there and that’s pressurized as well. So, water goes up a tube and that’s a water curtain so a big curtain, a round curtain of water drops down. I mean there’s toys all around this thing. Kids will be able to pull the string on this one. There’s a little mount right there for a tippy trough,” said Rivers.

Michelle Kosieniak is the Parks superintendent for planning and design. She said it will be even more kid welcoming.

“We have improved the accessibility. So, the new feature is going to have a ramp so that anyone that wants to get up on the structure can do that. And we also took into consideration that sometimes the water cannons and big splashes are a little much for our younger patrons. And so, in the zero-depth area there will be features for toddlers as well,” said Kosieniak.

Paradise Lagoon carries about a half-million-dollar price tag. Kosieniak said the last renovation was in 1995. The aim is to see the new feature up and running in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
