A mum marched her son back to a restaurant after he left his server a 10 per cent tip, claiming she raised him better than that. She explained how her teenager racked up a $104 (£86.82) bill - but only tipped his waiter $10 (£8.35) for his hard work - believing this was "a lot of money".
But when he returned home, his mum called him out for being tight and ordered him to return to the restaurant with a $20 (£16.70) in hand for the server. In a TikTok video, user d.foster.president said: "You need to go get my wallet, you need to go get my Visa card, you need to go to the ATM, and you need to go grab a $20 and drive your a*** back to that restaurant because on a $104 check, $10 is a s***ty tip.
"I'm not asking, I'm telling. It's not funny. Do you know that guy might have kids? Do you know he gets taxed on it? Go get my credit card, get $20 and drive it back there.
"I want to see you hand it to them, I want to see you walk in. You don't know how to tip."
When uploading the video on TikTok, she wrote: "Legit he’s driving his a*** back there - I'm so sorry legit. I raised him better than this."
The 46-second clip has been viewed more than 2 million times and has sparked a discussion on America's tipping culture in its comment section.
One user said: "Good job Mama! I have talked to my kids in detail about how they better tip good when they start going out."
Another user added: "Imagine publicly shaming your kid for likes because he left what is socially acceptable as a tip."
A third user said: "Good job Mama! Nice kid too. He listened with a good attitude!"
One more user added: "I mean I completely understand this whole thing… but is the yelling/screaming necessary?"
It comes after a woman took to social media to share how she was charged a whopping $25 (£20) after a waitress cut the birthday cake she brought into the restaurant.
TikTok user Gigi, who is known as @vivala_blondiiie online, shared how she was out celebrating a friend's birthday - and made a homemade cake for the special occasion.
She took the cake to the restaurant to surprise her friend - and when asked whether they wanted it cutting and brought back out to them, she politely said 'Yes'.
However, it wasn't until she reviewed her receipt - which came to a total of $126.98 (£103.33) - when she realised she'd been charged $25 (£20) for the cake to be cut.
She said on TikTok : "When the server asks if we want the cake we brought cut, thinking she's doing something nice for us... but it was $25. I didn't know this was a thing?"
While some users shared their shock over this "outrageous" charge, others claim this is normal for restaurants and reminded her "nothing in life is free".
One user said: "News to me! $25 is way too much and they should have told you first."
Another user added: "Many restaurants do this but they definitely should have told you about the fee."
But a third user said: "It's obvious. I don't know why people like bringing outside stuff into restaurants."
One more user added: "Some restaurants let you bring in your own bottle of wine but you pay to have it opened. I mean, you're not buying their stuff so?"
