Outrage after wheelchair friendly toilet is 'completely destroyed' by vandals in Portmarnock

A new wheelchair accessible toilet in Portmanock has been completely destroyed in an act of vandalism.

Taking to social media, Fingal County Council said that the new wheelchair accessible toilet at Strandmill in Portmarnock was "completely destroyed" overnight.

They said: "The toilets were installed during the summer of 2021 at considerable cost to Fingal County Council. The toilet has been entirely burned to the ground and is no longer usable for members of the public who require wheelchair accessible toilet facilities.

"Fingal County Council condemn this vandalism and behaviour and ask that anyone with information on the act to please contact the Gardai."

The area has since been cordoned off to the public, and the council said that it will replace the toilet as soon as possible.

Social media users were shocked by the act of vandalism.

One person wrote: "This is shocking news, no respect. Hope there was CCTV so they are caught or maybe someone saw it and could report it. It was so great that these facilities were provided."

Another wrote: "I am disgusted, new accessible toilet for people with disabilities burned out. Lost for words."

A third said: "Disgraceful."
