Outlander star Sam Heughan shares prequel series update and fans won't be happy

Scottish actor Sam Heughan has shared an update with fans on the upcoming Outlander prequel series.

Best known for his role as James "Jamie" Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser on the beloved drama series, the Balmaclellan-born actor teased some details about the new series.

Speaking to Esquire, he stated that it will be centred around his character's parents, Ellen and Brian Fraser.

While he couldn't reveal too much, he was able to share one important tidbit — and fans will not be happy.

"All I can tell you is that I'm not in it," Heughan said when asked what he could reveal.

"I believe that it's a prequel focusing on Jamie's parents when they were younger, so I guess you might see a young version of him at some point.

"But I think I may be a little too old to play young Jamie now!"

While for many viewers, the lush Highlands setting is the biggest draw, others will not be pleased to hear of Heughan's absence.

However, the Scottish actor did leave fans with a glimmer of hope that he could appear in the as-yet untitled prequel, stating: "I could play his dad maybe, or a flash forward? It is time travel, after all."

Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts will return to write and executive produce the upcoming series.

Elsewhere in the interview, Heughan revealed that he would "love" to play James Bond after Daniel Craig stepped down from the role in 2021.
