Outlander star Sam Heughan on why ‘dark’ and ‘unsettling’ Season 6 is one of his favourites

Outlander star Sam Heughan has revealed a little more about the challenges the cast and crew faced when putting together season 6.

Shortened by the pandemic and co-star Caitriona Balfe's pregnancy, season six only had eight episodes, with some of those planned being moved over to an extended season 7.

However, Sam stated that he found it to be the most interesting yet, even going as far as to declare it his favourite.

Speaking to Golden Derby via video interview, Sam said: “Wow, what a season.

“It was a very intense season and it was a shorter season due to various factors."

He then pointed to the challenges facing them, including Covid and of course his "wonderful co-star being pregnant".

Sam added: "[Caitriona] worked right up until the wire until she almost gave birth."

And despite all of those challenges, he exclaimed that it's honestly one of his favourite seasons yet.

"It’s dark, it’s unsettling," he explained. "You see the Frasers popularity waning, you see this decay coming.”

And of course you saw the changes in Jamie Fraser himself.

Describing his character as a "very strong man" who is "strong in the face of adversity", the Scottish star added that Jamie is older now and has an added fragility that wasn't there before.

"He’s got more to lose," stated Sam. "He doesn’t care about his body per se, but he cares about losing others.

"He has a lot more to lose. He has his whole family now, his extended family. But I think that the one thing is just Claire.

“He can’t live without her.”

Can't live without her indeed, and fans are no doubt feeling the same without the pair of them at the moment.

Thankfully, filming for season 7 is well underway, let's hope it's Sam's new favourite when it finally airs.
