Outlander's Sam Heughan wins prestigious tequila award for Sassenach Select Spirits

Sam Heughan's alcohol brand Sassenach Select Spirits has taken home another award, but this time for his new Tequila.

The Outlander actor debuted his tequila brand, The Sassenach Select Double Wood Reposado, in December 2021, and was met with widespread praise and acclaim as he is already sweeping the awards.

The star, originally from Dumfries, is best known for his role as Highland Warrior Jamie Fraser in the TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's historical fantasy series Outlander.

The judges praised the tequila for its “clean and fresh palate with increasing savoury notes, honey, vanilla, late pepper and bitter herbals”.

The 41-year-old tweeted: "Gold Medal! I’m proud to share our Master Medal win #TheSpiritsMasters."

Revealing that bottles are now available to pre-order, he added: "Hope you’ll try a bottle of our award winning tequila! Slàinte and Salud! @SassenachSpirit X"

Heughan joined forces with El Tequileño Master Distiller Antonio ‘Tony’ Salles to create the limited edition Sassenach Select Tequila.

He wasn't the only celeb to pick up an award, as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's tequila brand Teremana Tequila Blanco, also picked up a Master in the 100% Agave Tequila -Super‐Premium Blanco range.

Judges described The Rock's tequila as a "well made approachable tequila".

In recent years, more and more celebrities are dipping their toe into the world of alcohol as we've got Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila, George Clooney’s Tequila Casamigos, Ryan Reynolds' Aviation American Gin, Justin Timberlake's Sauza 901 tequila, Matthew McConaughey's Wild Turkey Longbranch Bourbon and many more.

At the time of his tequila brand launch, Heughan told Forbes Magazine the inspiration behind the drink was "friendship".

He added: “A couple of years ago, pre-Covid, we went to visit [Mexico].

"I had very little experience with tequila. I think especially in the UK, we’re quite far behind the rest of the world in our appreciation for it. I was just completely blown away.

"My eyes were opened the whole experience. We went to Tequila Town. We met Tony Salles, we met the whole family, Tequileño. Just to discover the whole process and the history and the heritage behind it.

"What was really fun was that we took our whisky with us. We were just launching. In fact, when we were there, we launched our first release of the Sassenach whisky and those guys were really excited for us.

"We celebrated with some whisky and they said they enjoyed it, and we enjoyed their tequila. It was really a very sort of natural, organic process.”
