Outlander's Sam Heughan set to play lead in movie adaptation of PlayStation hit

Outlander star Sam Heughan is set to play the leading role in a film adaptation of the PlayStation game Days Gone.

The Dumfries born actor is best known for his role as Jamie Fraser on the historical fantasy series, and has already lined up his next big screen role. According to Deadline , Sony PlayStation Productions opted to develop the film after seeing the success Uncharted had at the box office, which grossed around $402 million globally.

Days Gone follows the story of Deacon St John, played by Heughan, a former motorcycle club member-turned-outlaw, who fights against zombie-like humans in a post-apocalyptic world after a pandemic wipes out most of the population. It isn't clear if this will be the 42-year-old's first role after Outlander Season 7, or if he will film the project between Season 7 and 8, as Starz's hasn't yet renewed the series for another season.

According to the PlayStation site, “Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game set in a harsh wilderness two years after a devastating global pandemic. Play as Deacon St. John, a drifter and bounty hunter who rides the broken road, fighting to survive while searching for a reason to live.”

Outlander Season 7 is currently filming in Scotland for release in 2023 on STARZ. As for it's future, Starz’s President of Original Programming Kathryn Busby told Deadline, following the announcement of the Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood, "Outlander is such a very important show for us that we would love to have as much Outlander as we possibly can have. [The prequel will] absolutely not [take away Starz’s commitment to the original series].

"What we’ve proven with the Power franchise is that we can have different lanes of storytelling around the same base. We believe that we can do that with Outlander as well. They are not mutually exclusive at all.”

Outside of his Outlander commitments, the Scottish actor is keeping himself extremely busy alongside with his thriving drinks company, upcoming memoir and the highly anticipated second season of Men In Kilts, which wrapped filming in New Zealand in early 2022. Heughan's first memoir, Waypoints, is set to be released later this year as it gives fans a 'deeply personal' insight into the actors life.

Waypoints will be published in the UK by Radar, with a release date of 25 October 2022 and follows Heughan as he travels along the West Highland Way, explores his life and sees him reflect on the personal waypoints that define him. According to The Book Seller, the publisher said: “With the walk itself as the backdrop to the narrative, the result is a love letter to the wild Scottish landscape that means so much to Sam, and a charming, funny, wise, and searching insight to the world through his eyes.”

Sam Heughan added: “Waypoints is a memoir with a difference. I wanted to tell the stories and share the experiences that have shaped me, but to do that I needed to challenge myself and spend some time in my own company, away from the distractions of everyday life. And for me there’s no better place to reflect than in the wild Scottish Highlands.”
