Outlander's Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe share their favourite episodes so far

We all have our own favourite episodes of the show, and there's always debate around which ones everyone loves.

But it seems that it's not just fans of Outlander who have an opinion, author and creator Diana Gabaldon and stars Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) have also revealed their choices.

Speaking with TV Guide for their Outlander Forever Special Collector’s Issue, the trio spoke about the episodes from each season which really resonated with them.

All three have a varied selection of episodes, with each giving insight as why they chose them.

Sam Heughan's favourite episodes

The star, who plays Jamie in the hit show, revealed some of the episodes that were most memorable for him, including the conclusion to season one, To Ransom a Man's Soul , which features his torture at the hands of Black Jack Randall.
He described the harrowing episode as one of the "most challenging" things he's ever filmed.
The Scots actor also pointed to the first episode of Season 3, The Battle Joined , which focusses on the Battle of Culloden and sees the "final goodbye" to the Scottish clan characters and a big chapter in Jamie's life.

Season 4, Episode 9, The Birds & the Bees

Though we often see Jamie display emotion when it comes to Claire and his kin, but it was especially poignant getting to see him react so powerfully to meeting someone he'd never met before in Season 4, Episode 9, The Birds & the Bees.

Finally getting to meet his daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) for the first time, Sam said that this moment with Jamie was one of his overall favourites.

“Jamie and Brianna finally meeting was such an iconic moment," Sam explained. "and Sophie is so fun to work with.

“We laughed a lot while hunting bees and this episode is where we see father and daughter really bond.”

Caitriona Balfe's favourite episodes

The Irish actress has several favourite episodes across all five seasons so far, including Season 2, Episode 7, Faith , which was filled with stringent emotion, raw and painful for Claire, Caitriona said it made her "find new depths" in her work.

Another favourite for Cait was the first ever episode, Sassenach .

“Claire was discovering her new world, as was I," she stated to TV Guide. "For something to become a success, you need a certain alchemy, a certain magic, and it was apparent from day one on Episode 1 that we were lucky enough to have that on this show.”

Episode 5, episode 12, Never My Love

One of the true standouts for Cait, and one of the most important for Claire, was the incredible finale of season 5, where the Fraser's Ridge family come together to rescue Claire.

Dark and emotionally charged, the tough scenes with the Browns, the 60s dream sequence and Jamie eventually getting her back was just a truly pivotal moment for the show.

“It pushed us all to find new ways of telling this story," the star explained. "I loved the whole ’60s dreamlike element. To go within Claire’s mind during the attack felt like an empowering way of telling her story, and I’m proud of the work we did on that episode.”

Diana Gabaldon's favourite episodes

Despite being unable to a pick a favourite in season one due to how great it was, (she did highlight the wedding off course), Diana was more forthcoming for later seasons.

Picking out Season 2, Episode 10, Prestonpans , – "What can I say I like blood" – and Season 5, Episode 7, The Ballad of Roger Mac , which she loved for the "incredible acting", there was one standout she was happy to go into more detail on.

Season 3, Episode 4, Of Lost Things

At the heart of Outlander sits the idea of time travel and the distances people will go for true love and Diana believes the episode Of Lost Things handles that separation of time between two fated lovers beautifully.

“‘Of Lost Things’ is dramatic, intense, heartbreaking and so beautifully engineered by Toni Graphia (executive producer),” Gabaldon told TV Guide. “With Claire’s and Jamie’s stories of love and loss happening in counterpoint, 200 years apart.”
