Outlander's Sam Heughan admits being 'pretty depressed' after knee injury

Sam Heughan has opened up about feeling "pretty depressed" after an a bike accident resulted in injury.

Sam, originally from Dumfries, plays Jamie Fraser in the hit Starz show Outlander, which has just aired the first episode of the highly anticipated sixth season.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Sam discussed everything diet, fitness and relaxation related - but admitted an injury set him back last year.

After hurting his knee in a bike accident last year, the Scots actor had to switch up how he chooses to spend his down time.

Sam Heughan talked to Gentleman's Journal about Bond, spies and Sir Roger Moore (Gentleman's Journal)

He told the publication: "I’ve had to re-approach how I switch off since having a bike accident back in December.

"I tore my MCL and fractured my knee, I'm still kind of rehabbing them.

"I was at a point where I needed to start taking things easier, and the injury has forced me to do so.

"Until that point, I was going and doing CrossFit style workouts, cycling there and back, and usually doing a second workout later in the day when I could fit it in. It was a little too much really."

He continued: "I was pretty depressed for a couple of days after the injury.

"I've done a lot of endurance sports, marathons and the likes, going hard is what I like doing. But then suddenly, I could only do upper body for a long time, and then I could do some bike work, but I couldn't run.

"It has made me look at what I can do and find new challenges within those limits.

"For example, I started doing a lot more single arm stuff than normal, which comes with its own difficulties, and balance work too."

Sam has made quite the recovery from his biking accident last year as before the Outlander season six premiere, he'd spent his time filming in New Zealand alongside Graham McTavish.

The Outlander co-stars were filming the second season of their travel show, Men in Kilts, as they travel through New Zealand exploring the countries history and culture.

Men in Kilts season two is expected to air in late 2022, or early 2023.
