Outlander missed out on Emmy nominations and fans are furious about it

Season six of Outlander aired on our screens between March and May 2022, meaning it was a contender for the Emmys nominations. However, the popular STARZ show was snubbed when the nominations were announced yesterday.

Fans were left gutted when all of the Outlander actors who were submitted for Emmy consideration failed to receive nominations. This includes leading stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, who were submitted for consideration along with 12 of their colleagues.

And this snub is not the first time fans of the show have been left fizzing by the Emmy Awards. Since the show first launched back in August 2014, the first five seasons have only picked up a grand total of four below-the-line bids, including music score, production design and costumes.

But one TV critic reckons he knows the reason why the show isn't popular at the Emmys. Marcus James Dixon, senior editor at the Gold Derby website, says the move to Starz - and the fact it is a romance show - were the reasons behind the alleged snub.

He said: "Frankly speaking, the Television Academy has always had a tough time embracing the romance genre, as they much prefer crime shows, legal shows, etc. Last year’s drama series nominee, Bridgerton, was a rare exception.

"However, that period romance had the benefit of being one of the most watched programs in Netflix history. Comparatively, the Outlander Season 6 episodes that aired on Starz only nabbed about half a million viewers each week."

Despite the lack of Emmy nominations Outlander received, many other high-ranking awards shows have recognised the STARZ show.

It won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress (Balfe), three People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show, two Critics Choice Awards for Most Bingeworthy Show, and two Gold Derby Awards for Best Drama Actor (Heughan).

Taking to Twitter shortly after the nominations were announced, one person tweeted: "It has to be to say that Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and Outlander absolutely deserve all the nominations for their outstanding Season 6. It is 100000% the Television Academy's loss for continually passing them over every year."

With another adding: "Caitríona Balfe is trending because being in an Oscar nominated film and nominated for that role up the wazoo still isn’t enough for the Emmy’s to give her the Outlander nomination she deserves six seasons in. Literally THE greatest actress. #caitríonabalfe #Outlander #Emmys"

One fan wrote: "the fact that @caitrionambalfe was snubbed after her performance on @Outlander _STARZ this year is another proof of how disgusting this industry is. Shame on you, Emmys!"

The cast and crew started production on the seventh season this year, and have been promised that there will be 16 new episodes as season six was so short.
