Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has opened up about her characters Claire and Jamie Fraser's relationship as they age.
The lead roles are played by Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan in the hit Starz drama, and the duo have done an amazing job bringing the lovers to life.
During a recent interview, the writer revealed that's not set to change as they grow even older.
Diana was quick to shut down the idea that older characters in stories like Outlander aren't interesting as she insists the couple "still have sex".
Speaking with Seattle Times, Diana said: “If you come out of the romance novel reading tradition and so forth, only people up to about 30 or maybe 35 these days — are at all interesting, because you know, they still have sex.
“You can’t have stereotyped old geezers running around doing stuff that 30-year-old people would be doing, but that doesn’t mean what they are doing is pointless or uninteresting."
The series follows the adventure of time-travelling World War II nurse Claire who transported from 1945 back to 1743 and fell in love with Scottish Highland warrior Jamie.
Before its on-screen adaptation, the first Outlander book was a huge hit after it was released in 1991 and now the upcoming season 6 of the show is based on the sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
When writing her novels, Diana allowed the characters to age as their stories progressed and matured over the years.
This was shown in the TV series as Claire’s daughter, Brianna Fraser, eventually graduated, joined her parents in the past and started her own family.
By season five, Claire is in her 50s and her development was realistic, as viewers watched when she experienced hot flashes, as a nod to her character going through menopause.
Viewers are set to be seeing more of older Claire and Jamie in the upcoming instalment of Outlander.
Another thing which will also develop is the world around them, as season six will be set in 1773, it will also feature the American Revolutionary War.
This could also prove to be a challenging time for the couple because Claire was English and Jamie was Scottish.
Additionally, it is likely Claire will be busy tending to the many casualties as she set up a Doctors surgery at Fraser’s Ridge, where they reside.
Heughan previously spoke to TV Insider: "I think they obviously know from history what’s coming and they know which is the winning side and they’re obviously on the wrong side.
Jamie’s obviously doing it for land, doing it for his family. He’s doing it for his tenants but yeah, it certainly puts him on the wrong side.”
Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz, and season 6 will air March 6 2022.
