Parvatipuram Zilla Sadhana Vedika convener Samala Simhachalam on Sunday urged the State government to name the new district as Parvatipuram instead of Manyam.
At an emergency meeting held at Parvatipuram, Vedika members passed a unanimous resolution on their demand while thanking the government for creating a new district headquartered at Parvatipuram.
Vedika members T. Jogarao, Gorli Appalaraju, D. Suresh Kumar and others felt that Manyam name was not apt since Parvatipuram was well-known for the last 300 years.
Mr. Simhachalam said that a detailed report explaining the history of Parvatipuram would be submitted to the officials concerned.
Meanwhile, some locals of Mentada mandal of Vizianagaram district met Minister for Municipal Administration Botcha Satyanarayana and requested him to use his good offices to continue the mandal in Vizianagaram district instead of merging it with the proposed Manyam district. They said that Mentada was very close to Vizianagaram.
On the other hand, a few organisations of Palakonda in Srikakulam district are opposing its merger with Manyam district.
They urged people from all sections to observe bandh on Wednesday to step up pressure on the government to make Palakonda as the district or headquarters for Manyam district.
Following the call, Srikakulam Superintendent of Police Amit Bardar reportedly reviewed the issue and directed the local officials to ensure law and order in Palakonda and other parts of the mandal.
