Outdoor art exhibition a short drive from Liverpool that’ll ‘brighten your day’

A short drive from Liverpool is the Winter Art Garden, an outdoor exhibition comprising 12 pieces of colourful artwork.

Based at Hawarden Estate in Deeside, the Winter Art Garden “celebrates the beauty of winter” through the use of colour, light and a variety of materials, including wood, metal and perspex. Entry to the exhibition is free and it's suitable for all ages.

The outdoor gallery features a variety of artists who have come together to create the colourful exhibition that’s sure to brighten your day. Installations include ‘Rainbow’ by Gail Bryson and Rhys Jones, ‘Beautiful Billboard’ by Jemima Roberts and ‘Warming Light’ by Matt Jukes.

I visited the Winter Art Garden on a sunny weekend and was pleased to see the outdoor exhibition full of families exploring the works of art and relaxing on the grass. As I approached the open green space where all of the works of art are, I was amazed at the sea of colours and at the size of some of the pieces.

I’m sure the artworks would still look great on a cloudy day, but the sunshine and blue sky really made the pieces come to life, especially those made of perspex. Many of the installations cleverly incorporate the elements, such as Rebecca Kaye’s ‘Sky Hangings’ - a variety of painted flags - being brought to life by the gentle breeze.

A number of the artworks benefit from the light of the sun, such as those which cast colourful reflections onto the grass or create a shadow. Each piece has a plaque to explain what it is and the artist(s) who created it, and it was lovely to see both adults and children admiring the art, fascinated by the colourful reflections and shadows.

The free exhibition doesn’t take too long to explore with every piece being near each other, so I would say it’s worth including a visit to the Hawarden Estate farm shop and enjoying brunch or lunch at the café to make the trip even more worthwhile.

There's no closing date for the Winter Art Garden, so check the website before travelling to make sure it's still open. Hawarden Estate can be found on Chester Road, Hawarden, Deeside, CH5 3FB.
