Out in the cold: evicted families call for answers

Families camped in tents on the side of the road in Carrington overnight after they were evicted from their homes by the Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Aunty Debby Dates and her family were evicted from their flat at 6am on Monday. She camped in a tent in front of the house overnight, alongside 11 children and 10 adults with no where else to go.

"There is six-month-old babies and children up to the age of 10 sleeping on the floor, but no one has come to help," she said.

"I am starting to feel very sick and I feel like I am getting a cold.

"This is a sacred site for us. We do our culture here. It is very sacred to the Dates family. If it's taken away we have no more culture. Where do we go?"

The council evicted three flats on Monday as they claim thousands of dollars is owed in rent, and that some of the occupants were not eligible to be in the council-owned properties in the first place.

Debby's daughter Candy Towers camped with her mother and the rest of the Dates family overnight because she didn't feel safe leaving them in the dark on the side of the road.

"It was a really restless night and it started to rain and it was really cold but we only had three blankets and two pillows because they wouldn't let us get our stuff out of the property," she said.

"The elders sat around and had a meeting around 6:30am to try and make a decision on what to do about the issue but they couldn't come to a resolution because they just don't know what to do.

"There is no answer. They are just waiting for people to help and support and see what the options are, but there are no options at the moment.

"All they wanted was a lease to pay rent."

The issue has been ongoing since 2019. The council claim some of the occupants are "ineligible council members" that should not be in the property, and that "the rental income loss for the three properties is currently in excess of $67,000."

After her mother died inside the property it was verbally handed down to Aunty Debby, but she said the council would not offer the family a lease.

"We asked if we could go on the lease before the people in the units passed away, and the board wouldn't. So how do we owe money when they wouldn't give us a lease?"

The family said they have occupied the land for decades and they will not leave until the issue is resolved.
