Our Liverpool: Is it 'on the Wirral' or 'in Wirral'

Welcome to Thursday afternoon's Our Liverpool, where we share the key stories we have published today.

Personally, since joining the Liverpool ECHO I have mostly covered Wirral. It's a fantastic place and in the time it's been in my partial custody I've learned so much about it, including the fact that however I refer to it - "on the Wirral" or "In Wirral" - people will tell me the other way is in fact correct.

Early on I decided to stick with "in Wirral," but please, if you disagree do tell me why.

Elsewhere, here is a overview of some of today's biggest stories.

Cockroaches cause closure

In Wirral a takeaway with a history of cockroach infestations was ordered to close and pay thousands to the council in legal and environmental health costs. During an inspection at the beginning of the month, officers were told "mice had always been an issue at the premises."

'High alert' after milk incident

A close-knit St Helens community is on "high alert" after a week of break-ins and other crimes, including one where someone's petrol was siphoned from her car and replaced with milk stolen from a neighbour's doorstep. The car had to be towed following the incident.

And finally ... Splashworld set for reopening.

What should've been an eight-month refurbishment of Sefton's popular water attraction has been almost four years in the making after multiple delays. But now there's light at the end of the tunnel after a source in Sefton Council confirmed they're working towards opening in Spring.
