On Friday temperatures rose to 32 in Nottingham which meat it was the perfect excuse to get outside for some sun. Naturally this was followed by a bit of a washout but it seems as though we're back on track for pleasant weather again. While there are lots of different places to visit or things to do, the landlocked position of the city means it's a bit of a trek to the beach.
If you fancy the idea of a good old-fashioned picnic, complete with blanket and triangle sandwiches then we've made a list of our top five options in the city. All of which are easily accessible by car, bus or tram from the city centre. Just make sure you grab the suncream and pack up any litter afterward.

1 - Colwick Park
Colwick Park has a little bit of everything so it's a great day out especially for families. There is some parking but it can get really busy so it's worth planning your trip. There is an ample amount of space to have a picnic near the water. There is also the Wired on Wheels van so you can grab a hot coffee or ice cream if you want.
There are a lot of activities around the park which you can book to do such as archery, wild swimming or even an obstacle course. While these activities may have a booking fee, there are plenty of free activities that you can take part in. It's the perfect space to play football or feed the ducks.
2 - Wollaton Park
A bit further out of the city centre is Wollaton Park which has a huge green area with plenty of picnic potential. There is a lot of parking at the hall and it's also accessible through bus and tram journeys too.
There is plenty of wildlife around to watch including deer which means being extra careful to pack up any litter when you finish. It's worth noting that the cafe does an amazing selection of drinks and ice cream. The transport museum is a must-see for any motoring enthusiasts too.
3 - Highfield Park
Highfield Park in Beeston is a hidden gem tucked away on the University grounds. It's easily accessible from the city centre via bus or tram so it's really easy to get to. The park has a beautiful lake surrounded by trees and nature which makes it great for a leisurely post-picnic stroll.
There is also the chance to go boating if you fancy something a little bit more active or a visit to the Lakeside Art Gallery if you prefer a more cultural option. An ice-cream van can always be found by the playground close to the tram stop at University so you can grab a cone on your way home.
4- Trent River
The Trent River has a lovely bank where you can spread out a blanket and watch the world - and the water go by. There are plenty of boats and wildlife to spot as you spend some hours relaxing in the sun.
There are plenty of things to do including a leisurely stroll in the park, a visit to the cafe for ice cream and little ones will be delighted by the playground with a great selection of swings. Adults on the other hand will be thrilled to note that there are several bars nearby for a post-picnic-pint.
5 - Woodthorpe Grange Park
Woodthorpe Grange Park is a public space in the middle of Sherwood towards the Northern edge of the city. It's one of the biggest parks that the city has to offer so plenty of space to get a picnic going.
Not only is there an abundance of nature to watch, but the park also has a tropical plant house, nursery, formal landscaped gardens and a café. There is also an 18-hole golf course for those who want to improve their game and a train sculpture at the entrance to the old railway,
The peaceful park is a great spot to spend some hours in but be warned if the weather suddenly changes then there is a lack of shelter.
